It’s time to make your spam problems go away: November 2021 Spam Update

UPDATE

Google November Update

Earlier this month, Google announced that it is rolling out a new search ranking algorithm update aimed at eliminating spam results. It’s called the ‘November 2021 Spam Update’. Three spam updates have already been hit by Google this year. Google updated its algorithm against spam for the fourth time this year with this update. In 2020, Google’s automated systems filtered out 25 billion spammy pages daily.

How can this affect your online store?

It can be quite frustrating to see changes in traffic and rankings from an SEO standpoint. This is a sure sign that the spam update has hit. Spam update targets guidelines that aren’t specifically addressed. We do not know if the issue is caused by links, content, or another area. However, Danny Sullivan from Google commented that spam updates like this one are designed to target content that does not follow their guidelines. In terms of the full impact of this update, we feel it was strong. However, you would only have noticed it if you were engaged in spam attempts that this algorithm targeted. Furthermore, Google indicated that this was a content spam issue rather than a link spam issue.

What considers as Spam?

Google has a particular definition that what will be considered spam or what will be not. Google states that it includes those sites that try to push the visitor to install some malicious software or deliberately ask about their personal information.

As a matter of policy, Google has a strict definition of what it considers spam, which primarily involves low-quality sites that trick users into providing personal information or downloading malware. . In Google’s guidelines, “spam” describes communications with some kind of malicious intent behind them. Phishing scams and websites impersonating other reputable websites are also forms of spam.

Low-quality content may fit some people’s definition of spam but it does not match Google’s. It is also pertinent to note that even sites that follow Google’s guidelines may be guilty of spam without even being aware.

When a site is not adequately secured, it can suffer a hack, resulting in the site serving spam and/or malware to visitors. As far as spam updates go, it doesn’t matter whether it’s hacked spam or intentional spam.

The owner of a hacked website is responsible for maintaining its security, so hacked sites aren’t treated any differently

Check whether you are affected or not.

It would be prudent to run an SEO audit to identify any spam issues on your website you may be unaware of. Keep an eye on the numbers during this time to ensure you meet the guidelines, and ensure your Google ranking isn’t negatively affected. It is also a good idea to follow the SEO best practices within Google and ensure you are up to date on these.  You can also check your site health through search Console but if still, you are not able to understand where you have gone wrong and why your traffic and ranking are being affected, then you can contact us and from that point, it will be our responsibility to handle this issue and your site health and keep your site up to date.
